Hink-stap-sprong / Hop, skip and jump

Bolsward 1988

installatie in drie delen/ installation in three parts

An installation existing of three works in a private house where the skylight of the door at the back was the inspiration for the small painting in the box bed. ‘Instar horologii, instar divini animalis’, written on the extremities, are the words of the physicist Kepler by which he asks himself, around 1600, if the universe is based on a mechanistic principle (watch, clockwork) or if it is driven by a divine spirit. In the clog-shed stood a man-sized bell made of fresh Frisian clay, a rich gray-blue substance. The bell seems to refer to the ‘horologii’ theme but it’s lively rendering contradicts a direct link. Lastly the garden that has gone wild locates a sculpture resembling a horse (chessplay knight). Made of living foliage it is a possible ‘divini animalis’,  were it not that the knight in the game knows its asymmetrical moves bound by strict logic.
